MIDH (Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture)

Objective of the MIDH Scheme

It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the holistic growth of the horticulture sector covering fruits, vegetables, root & tuber crops, mushrooms, spices, flowers, aromatic plants, coconut, cashew, cocoa and bamboo. Among the many mission objectives, one of the objectives of the MIDH is to support skill development and create employment generation opportunities for rural youth in horticulture and post-harvest management, especially in the cold chain sector.

Sub-schemes of MIDH

    The MIDH scheme has the following sub-schemes as its component:

  • National Horticulture Mission.
  • Horticulture Mission for North-East & Himalayan States (HMNEH)
  • National Horticulture Board (NHB)
  • Coconut Development Board (CDB)
  • Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH)

Human Resource Development (HRD) in Horticulture

The mission supports skill development and creates employment generation opportunities for rural youth in horticulture and post-harvest management, especially in the cold chain sector. Capacity buildings of farmers and technicians is also provided for adopting improved technologies, through existing institutions like State Agriculture Universities, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and institutes with the Department of Horticulture in the States. Rural youth and farmers are given training under various farming techniques for horticulture crops, mushroom cultivation, floriculture, beekeeping, protected cultivation, micro-irrigation, post-harvest processing, etc.

Financial assistance for major interventions/activities

Under MIDH, the financial assistance is provided for the following major interventions/activities

    Setting up of nurseries and tissue culture units for production of quality seed and planting material.

  • Area expansion, i.e., establishing new orchards and gardens for fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
  • Rejuvenation of unproductive, old, and senile orchards.
  • Protected cultivation, i.e. poly-house, green-house, etc, to improve productivity & grow off-season high-value vegetables and flowers.
  • Organic farming and certification.
  • Creation of water resources structures and watershed management.
  • Bee-keeping for pollination.
  • Horticulture Mechanization.
  • Creation of Post-Harvest Management and Marketing infrastructure.
